Will you dance with me?

I know I’m supposed to exercise, especially now that I’m older, but I have never enjoyed “working out.” I do walk my two dogs a couple of times a day, and my husband and I walk rather than drive whenever possible, but that is not really “cardio” or “muscle-building” exercise. If I’m going to do this, I need something fun!

As I was scrolling Instagram, an ad for an app called “DanceBit” caught my eye. DanceBit made a case for getting exercise and losing weight while having fun. I thought to myself, “I love music, dancing is exercise, and it doesn’t feel like exercise because I enjoy it. I’m gonna give this a shot!”

I downloaded the app and used it for a while. The dances were fun, but the technology of the app was terrible. If a session was interrupted by a phone call, I’d have to start all over again with that session, which really irritated me. The app wouldn’t let me skip ahead to where I left off, because then it couldn’t be marked as completed. I’m the kind of person that needs to complete things and track accurate data.

So, I switched to the “Apple Fitness” app for dancing. The technology of the app was better, but the dancing was boring and was almost always the same style of dance.

Now I just play my own music for 20 minutes and dance, which is just as good (actually, much better!). I still get sweaty, and I’m listening to music that I really love. I can sing along as loud as I want to, which is an added bonus! I hold small hand weights while I dance so I get a workout for my arms.

I haven’t gone “out” dancing in a while, but when I did go six months ago with a friend, I just felt uncomfortable in the “club.” Dancing at home on a Friday night is way less stinky and again, I can listen to my own music. I just want to dance freely at home and be comfortable in my own space.

Do you like to dance?
