Yes, but why octopuses?
My art draws inspiration from octopuses, known for their cleverness and adaptability. They can fit seamlessly into any situation and express their emotions clearly.
With their brief lives and three hearts symbolizing boundless love, they remind us to make the most of every moment.
Through my work, I aim to raise awareness about these fascinating creatures.
I primarily use watercolor, employing bold, sparkly colors to capture the detailed textures.
For example, in my painting "Chiteki," a gold octopus with silver suckers shimmers with sparkly watercolors, showcasing its unique beauty.
It took time to develop my style, inspired by children’s books and comics, which influence my playful and vibrant approach.
My art celebrates the inner child, reflecting my love for vibrant colors and playful energy.
Despite a not always colorful childhood, I found joy in creativity. Colors represent joy to me, and I strive to evoke that same youthful exuberance in others, reminding them that playfulness and wonder are ageless.
My octopus artwork highlights the extraordinary behaviors of octopuses.
Ultimately, my art aims to connect us to our inner child, the joy of colors, and the diverse life forms we share this world with.
The Intriguing Octopus Collection
The Intriguing Octopus Collection is about the ocean's most fascinating creature: the octopus.
Watercolors are quite unforgiving, so to paint these octopuses with black watercolors as their background was a huge challenge! I chose positions for each octopus that seem playful and fun — and then I went for it!
In addition to the black watercolors providing vivid contrast, octopuses sometimes live in dens or quite deep in the ocean, in the dark. So it seemed natural to have mysterious, almost outer space-like backdrops.
The collection invites viewers to get curious and have some fun.

About Nicole Hanusek
When I was growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, I lived with my mom, my aunt, and my grandfather. My grandfather was an alcoholic. He wasn't physically abusive, but he was often emotionally abusive.
To escape abusive situations, I would make art. I started drawing mermaids at a really young age, and I drew other fantasy creatures through high school. Creativity was one of the few things that I had control over, and I would become totally absorbed in little worlds of fantasy creatures, which made me feel safe.
I eventually went to art school, where I majored in Illustration, although my career has been in web design. I started my own company in 2008. I never gave up on art and recently decided that it needs to take priority in my life.
I finally found my style and inspiration, creating colorful sea creatures, animals, and abstract paintings.
I live in San Francisco with my husband and two dogs.
